Available industrial warehouse spaces need to be modernized for e-commerce in the 21st century. Is your warehouse technologically designed?

How old is your industrial warehouse? Was it built before the year 2000? If so, is it designed and equipped with technology equipment and devices for e-commerce? If not, time to modernize so you can stay a successful distribution center business.

According to a recent blog post published in Supply Chain Dive, “Facilities built before 2000 still account for 89% of storage space in the U.S., and that's forcing tradeoffs on clients.”

CBRE Group, Inc., the world’s largest commercial real estate services and investment firm, explains that aging U.S. warehouse buildings need to be transformed into 21st century e-commerce facilitated spaces. This means being updated with equipment and new structures to effectively serve the needs of today’s logistics tenants.

Time for Industrial Warehouse Space to Embrace Change!

E-commerce has changed the way business does business. Industrial warehouse space today needs to come into the smart age. Not only do buildings need to be retrofitted with smart technology, they need to be taller.

CBRE continues to report, “Nearly 1 billion sq. ft. of total warehouse inventory is more than 50 years old and has clear heights of less than 20 feet—well below logistics tenant requirements. Warehouses built since 2008 are generally three times larger than older ones and account for only 4% of the nation’s total number of buildings.”

Well, there’s good news and bad news about the need to modernize warehouse space. First, it’s going to require funding. Some businesses will see this as an expense rather than an investment. That might be considered fiscally bad news (depending upon how warehouse owners see it.)

The good news means new construction work at the very least. Are there enough qualified craftsmen and craftswomen to do the construction work? According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2016 – 2026 occupational outlook for Construction Laborers and Helpers is predicted to grow about 12%. So, looks like we might see more people developing construction skills.

Any way you look at it, change is the one constant in life. Is your warehouse ready to adapt to the future changes of business?
