Logistics automation improves supply chain profitability. But, sometimes at a cost of human jobs. Is this really good for business?

Dealing with humans can be annoying and invigorating. Variety is the spice of life, after all, and each person uniquely contributes to our relationships in life. However, when it comes to the labor force, managers spend a lot of time on fixing people problems. Wouldn’t the working world be better if we let more robots do as much work as possible?

In a recent Verisk Maplecroft report, experts in the workforce discussed logistics automation issues affecting jobs and humans. Debated topics included dire South East Asia job losses resulting from the start of robotic manufacturing.

Human resources experts predict robots in the workplace may produce a spike in global supply chain slavery and labor abuses. What can proactively prevent workplace exploitation? Some debaters want to look to government agencies. Others recommend training about the issue so each company can contribute to generally preserving humanity. Who do you think needs to prevent automation from threating millions of livelihoods?

Logistics Automation – Friend or Foe?

Robots preserve lives and increase profits. What about firefighter robots or bomb squad robots? They can preserve life, right? So, in these cases, the metal and plastic technological wonders seem like a good use of inventions. But on the other side of the coin, robots can take jobs from humans. Think about warehouses and DCs using robots.

Robots don’t have offensive tattoos or body odors, don’t take sick days, don’t really talk back to bosses or a host of “people problem” issues that frustrate managers. Yes, they sometimes need maintenance but in the long run, robots make a company more profitable. That being said, a warehouse can be run more effectively and efficiently with robots.

But what about how an increase in logistics automation could globally affect the human race’s livelihoods? If more people are out of work due to robotics, won’t we have more homeless roaming the streets? What are your thoughts on this issue for your company? Something to think about, isn’t it?
